PREMATURE SALUTE TO VICTORY
Whistles And Sirens In Wellington
Shortly alter 9 p.m. on Saturday there was a premature and impromptu salute to victory in Wellington. Train whistles blew the customary victory signals, for several minutes, and a ship’s siren joined in. ’ The noise raised expectations of a formal victory announcement, but this was not forthcoming. It began to rain hard and the city looked miserable. On such a night few people were in the ntood for celebration. There was some spasmodic cheering in the streets, but it soon died down.
