RAILWAY TRAVEL
No Easing Of Restrictions For Easter SHORTAGE OF COAL It would not be possible in view of the coal position to lift the restrictions on railway travel for the Easter holidays, stated the Minister of Railways, Air. Semple, yesterday. He said the inquiries already made by the public showed that people were very eager to travel extensively during the coming holiday period, not only on the normal running of trains, but on the possibility of extra services being provided. The coal position demanded a continuance of the restrictions, said the Minister. The Railways Department had made every possible effort not only to use coal to the best advantage, but also to conserve and build up stocks. It had not been possible to make any progress at all; m tact, the consumption of coal over the whole system throughout the Dominion tor the past week exceeded the supply into depots >bv 859 Lons, notwithstanding the present restrictions in respect of goods and passenger traffic. This means that it would be foolish and indeed dangerous for the department to make any concessions The Minister added that he realized how essential it was at Easter time, which represented the last of the summer and autumn holidays, to give the people every opportunity to- travel, but it was impossible on this occasion to serve that demand. _________
