HOTEL CLOSING AVOIDED
One of the largest private hotels m New Zealand, the Grand at Timaru, was to have been closed down by the owning company because of staff difficulties, the furnishings sold- at auction and the building converted into flats. However, a partnership took over, and the. hotel will continue as before. (Before this arrangement was made the mayor of Timaru wrote to the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, pointing out' that a serious lack of accommodation had been, aggravated by the recent closing of private hotels and boarding hous’es. He suggested that a method of alleviating the position would be to secure the occupancy of the Grand Hotel, instal a caretaker and to provide lodging without meal service. He received a reply, but. in view of the developments, telegraphed Mr. Fraser that the hotel would' remain open and thanking him for his offer to assist.
