CURVED TRAM-RAILS
Some Replacements Necessary
While the wear is very heavy on ordinary tramway rails on busy sections, it is much heavier on the many curves which exist on the Wellington syi-tem. At present the curved rails on the corner of Adelaide Road mid Rugby Street, and at the foot of Kent Terrace, leading into Courtenay Place, are being replaced. Such was the grinding wear on th- 1 curved rails at Courtenay Place that the flange of ibe one nearest the reserve was worn down to a knife-edge, mid in one place had broken away altogether over a distance of a couple of yards. The new rails (1031 b. to the yard) are expected to last for at least eight years, 'rhe flange E half an inch in width. On less used curved tracks such rails may Inst 12 years or more. It all depends on wear and tear. , All the wear possible is being got out of lhe existing trn.ks, as rails are not ensilv come by nowadays. Orders tire placed, but fulfilment sometimes takes n long time.
