No Radio Licences. Five .persons were convicted for having no radio licences and were fined amounts up to 15/- in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterdjiy. No Railway Ticket. For travelling between Kaiwarra and Ava without paying his proper fare, on February 22 last, Cyril Raymond Storer was fined £2 and costs 16/- by Mr. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrates’,Court, Wellington, yesterday. Fatal Air Accident. An airman pilot under training, L/Ae. Ralph James Brownlie (father, Mr. J. Brownlie, Frasertown, Wairoa, Hawke s Bay) lost his life’in an aircraft accident near a South Island station early yesterday morning when the aircraft crashed during night flying training. Grade 1 Officers in N.Z. A special meeting of the Whangarei R. decided by resolution to approach the War Cabinet asking for an investigation into the number of grade" 1 officers remaining in New Zealand camps with a view to their employment in a more useful capacity.—P.A. Probation for Theft. Arthur Albert Reade was admitted to probation for six months by Mr. Sto.ut, S. in the Magistrates' Court. Wellington, yesterday, on charges of stealing sums of £1 and 10/-. Detective-Sergeant W. McLennan said accused had stolen the money from a fellow-worker; it had been recovered. Jail for Conversion of Cars. Two soldiers, George Hansen, aged 19, and Arthur Fraser, aged 20, appeared before Mr. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrates Court, Wellington, yesterday, on charges of converting motor-cars to their own use. Senior-Sergeant G. J. Paine said that the cars had been taken at Miramar, and were found at Johnsonville. The magistrate sentenced Hansen to . three months’ and Fraser to one month’s imprisonment.* Food Conference. Advice of the postponement of the international conference to deal with food problems has been received by the Government. The Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, stated yesterday that this was to have taken place in the United States on April 27, but had now been deferred till May IS. The Prime Minister has already announced that New Zealand will be represented at the conference. Man Shoplifter. "This man found it so easy to go round Wellington shops and lift goods that he made a habit of it,” said Senior-Sergeant G. J. Paine in the Magistrates Court, Wellington, yesterday when 'William Collins. bricklayer, aged 59, pleaded guilty to a number of charges of stealing goods from Woolwotrhs, Selfridges and MacDuffs. of n total value of £;>/l!)/i>. Jlr. Stout. S.M.. sentenced accused to two months with hard labour on the first charge and convicted and discharged him on the others. Engineers’ Registration. The following appointments to the Engineers’ Registration Board have been ■'azetted: —Mr. W. L. Newnham (En-"ineer-in-Chief. Public Works Department). Mr. F. T. Kissel (Chief Electrical Engineer, Public Works Department), Mr A, J. Dickson (assistant city engineer, Auckland), Mr. G. E. Breeze (chief inspector of machinery and chief inspector of ships). Mr. J. G. Lancaster (consulting engineer. Wellington), and Mr. R. A. Campbell engineer. Christchurch). The last three were recommended by the council of the New Zealand Institution,of Engineers.
