GIRAUD’S POLICY

Anti-Semites’ New Move Countered

(By Telegraph. Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received March 8, 8 p.m.) LONDON, March 7.

The High Commissioner of French North Africa, General Giraud, today protested against the German annexation of Alsace-Lorraine, says Algiers radio. General Giraud said that his Government rejects and does not recognize the incorporation of Alsace into the Reich. “The Vichy Government has remained silent. There is nothing to be expected from this phantom Government ; it no longer represents France,” the statement said. The Governor-General of Morocco, General Nogues, has issued a decree reinstating the French Government officials whom Vichy had sacked, and also repealing a law which ■prohibited listi ening in to foreign broadcasts. Following upon the publication of Vichy decrees against Jews in North Africa in the official Algerian Gazette on March 2, General Giraud has dismissed M. Bouni, who was the head of the department that was responsible for the decrees, and has abolished the department, says Morocco radio. General Giraud emphasized that Vichy's decrees were invalid in North Africa,, and that these were gazetted without his authority. General Giraud has ordered equal employments rights to be accorded to Jewish and Gentile women. He thus re- . moved the outstanding criticism of the Girqud Administration. General Gintud stated: “It has been reported that Jewish women were excluded from the nursing, postal and automobile service. This situation is inadmissablc at a time when the army needs help from all France and not racial prejudices.’’
