Captains Rankine And Dalgleish Retire It is announced that Captain J. Rankine and Captain A. S. Dalgleish, two popular and well known senior masters of the Union Steam Ship Co., Ltd., have resigned from the company's service for private reasons. Captain Rankine was born at Markinch, Fifeshire, Scotland, on May 3, 1882. At the age of sixteen he began his four years’ apprenticeship in the ship Dechmont, owned by Messrs. Lang and Fulton, of Greenock, and continued as third and second mate in sail for two years before transferring to steamers, in which he served for five years as third and second officer. He obtained his Master’s Certificate at Leith in April, 1908, and on March 20, 1910, he entered the Union Company’s service as fourth

officer of the Moeraki. He served successfully as third, second and chief officer of various vessels until appointed master of the Rosamond on May 6, 1916, since when he has commanded many of the company’s vessels. Iu May, 1929, Captain Rankine was granted extended leave to proceed to Scotland, and on October 25 of that year he took command of the new collier Kaimiro, for her maiden voyage to New Zealand. He subsequently eommauded a number of vessels, before being transferred to the trnns-pacifie service, where he commanded the Waihemo, Waikawa, Waiotapu, Waipori. and Wairuna, and on several occasions he has made voyages to India and Malaya, as relieving master of the Narbada. Captain Dalgleish was born at New-castle-on-Tyne on April 8, 1881, and comes of a family long connected with shipping, his elder brother being managing director of-the firm of Messrs. R. S. Dalgleish, Dtd., of Newcastle-on-Tyne. Captain Dalgleish had considerable experience at sea before coming to New Zealand, having served from junior officer to chief officer in various shipping companies at Home as well as eighteen months with the C.P.R. in the Pacific coast service. He obtained his Extra Master’s Certificate at South Shields in June, 1909. Captain Dalgleish joined the Union Company, as third officer of the first Komata, on January 27, 1913, aud

served as third and second officer of various vessels until appointed tutor oil the company’s training ship Aparima in August, 1916. 'While the vessel was ill the United Kingdom in November, 1917, he was granted leave to join the Royal Navy as Lieutenant, R.N.R., and returned to the company’s employ in May, 1919, when he was appointed chief officer of the Katoa. He was appointed to his first command, the Kaituna, on December 1, 1925. In August, 1929, Captain Dalgleish was sent, to the United Kingdom to take command of one of the company’s steamers then under construction, and his services were retained in a supervisory capacity till April, 1930, when lie was appointed master of the Waitnarino, fur her maiden voyage to New Zealand, lie also commanded the Waitnki and Waijiuri on their maiden voyages, and has since had charge of the. Kaiwarra, Koniata (2nd), Kaikorai, Kurow, and Waiana, of which vessel he relinquished command a few weeks ago.
