NEW SIREN TESTED
Checking Of Vehicles
Satisfaction with the stage of advancement reached by the air-raid shelter programme in AVellington was expressed by the citv engineer and controller of the works unit of the E.P.S., Air. K. E. Luke, on his return on Saturday afternoon from Auckland, where, with Mr. C. C. Miles, chief warden for the E.P.S. in Wellington, he spent two days last week inspecting the protective measures and general organization of the E.P.S, at the northern centre. Mr. Luke brought back with him a new compressed air siren, which was tested out in the Kilbirnie district trial on Saturday, and gave very satisfactory results. It arrived at Kilbirnie five minutes before the trial was scheduled to begin, but was fitted and in position to give the alarm. Difficulties in connexion with the identification of E.P.S. transport vehicles in AVellington at night may be overcome by the use of a blue transfer which Mr. Luke has brought back from Auckland. 'l'his is placed in the headlights, and with the blue background, the letters “E.P.S.” are picked out very clearly, instead of a vehicle having to be stopped for its authority to proceed to be determined.
