BATTLE OF ATLANTIC

Canada’s Experience (Received May 10, 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 9.

The Canadian Minister of the Navy, Mr. Macdonald, told the House of Commons in Ottawa that the ships which had been lost by enemy action after leaving Canada on Transatlantic trips totalled under 1 per cent, since the start of the war, but he declared that the sinkings up and dowu the Atlantic coast were very heavy. He added that vessels ■which travelled without escort were four times more vulnerable than those in convoy. It is learned that in an endeavour to reduce the loss of life all United States ocean and coastal vessels of over 1000 tons will soon be required to cany at least one portable transmitting radio for use in the lifeboats.
