TOC H. CAMP

Talk And Film At Rotary Club Luncheon “Raising New' Landfalls” was the title of a talk and moving picture of Toe II holiday eamp activities at Christinas time in Queen Charlotte Sound at the Rotary Club luncheon yesterday. Sir Alexander Roberts introduced the speaker, Mr. B. Malyon, who has been camp-master for some years. Mr. Malyon briefly referred to the underlying principles which the annual Toe H camp set out to establish. The main thing was an attempt to, build character in boys, while life in the open built up their physical powers. The, picture showed how both were accomplished. Some 600 boys , had passed through the camp, an average of 55 boys being accommodated each year, made up of Toe II boys, boys from the boys’ homes of Wellington, and a selection from the boys’ colleges. The camp was one of the activities of the school section of Toe H. It was interesting to see how the experiences of camp life influenced the lives of some of the boys, said Mr. Alalyon. For example, some of the boys who had previously not known one end of a boat from another became ardent boatmen and developed a love for the sea. This, in turn, had been the underlying cause of some of them volunteering for service in the Royal Navy. The love of the sea had been dormant in them, but the actual contact with it had brought it out. The picture, partly black and white and partly coloured, showed every phase of camp life, as it is conducted on Sir Heaton Rhodes's property, not far from Ship Cove. From morning to night the boys, while not shirking their domestic obligations in camp, have the time of their lives, fishing, hill-climb-ing through beautiful bush, ooating, rowing races, and indulging in all manner of sport. A running commentary on the picture was given by Mr. B. L. Hurrell. This year the camp win be held from Sunday, December 28, till Thursday. January 8.
