WORK AT ELLERSLIE

Leading Candidates For

Avondale Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, September 9. Some interesting work was performed at Ellerslie yesterday in preparation tor the Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting, which will be held on Saturday and Monday. Most interest was centred in the doings of the Avondale Cup and Flying Handicap horses. The best gallop ou a holding track was a solid six furlongs by Landveyor, who appears to be regaining form quickly. The No. 2 grass was used for galloping, and the weather was perfect. On the grass Landveyor (Poad) finished in front of Bronzo (Cameron) after running six furlongs in 1.19 3-5, Bronze Emerald (Hayvice) bringing him home over the last four in 58 4-5. Landveyor went very solidly, and Bronzd made a s-atisfactory showing without being bustled. . , Silver Quex (Gilchrist) _ moved nicely over four furlongs in 51 2-5. It is a long time since she has looked as well as she does at present. British Talent (Gilchrist) and Sir Cameron (D. Green) completed a round in 1.49 4-5, the last six furlongs in 1.21 3-5, and the last four in 53 4-5. They were ridden out in the last half-furlong, and there was very little between them, both finishing strongly. Royal Appellant (Messervy) and Aero King (Tremain) were together after covering a round in 1.49 3-5, the last six furlongs in 1.23, and the last four in on. They are in nice condition. Night Pilot and Transmitter.

Night Pilot (McTavish) worked over a round, going steadily early and running the last six furlongs with Princess Vai (Markwick) in 1.22. Every gallop is improving Night Pilot, and he is nearing form, though he is a gross customer who might be all the better for another race. Transmitter (D. Green) worked over a round, having no pace on till the last halfmile, which he ran on the extreme outside in 65 1-5. Transmitter will only require to go well in his final gallop to be in strong demand for the’Flying Handicap. Clinch (Smith), after going steadily for two furlongs, sprinted three furlongs along the back with Happicoat (Howard) in 39 1-5. Clinch showed, a good deal of dash and seems to be doing well again. Whether he will be quite seasoned enotugh to run a mile anrt a quarter right out on Saturday may be a little doubtful, though lie is a horse who does well on a light preparation. Other Gallops.

Other gallops were: — Three furlongs: Vaper Flame (Coon), 39 4-5; Northland Son. (Tremain), 47 1-5; Bambury Lane (Cameron; and Dependable (Hearn), 39 2-5; Transcript (T. Green) and Mr. Deeds (Bartels), 40 1-5; Wharemanea (Cleaver), last of strong work, 42 1-5; Kadina (Cameron), 41. Four furlongs: Red Warden (Poad), 59 1-5; Bronze Crest (Tremain), 54 1-5; June Tide ('McTavish), 55 2-5; Embassy (Bartels) and Dublin Show (T. Green), 53 3-5; Water Vixen (ClarkeJ, 56 3-5; Nettarion (Hughes), 54 2-5; Home Again (Gilchrist), 53. Five furlongs. Royal Art, 1.11 l-o; Lady Acushla (Tremaiu) and Last Survey (Gilchrist), 1.6 4-5; Royal Message (Cameron) beat Gold Bonnet (Gilchrist), 1.6 3-5; Grey Wing (Buchanan) and Balashiel (Jones), 1.11; Llandaff (Messervy), 1.8 2-5; Beaucdup (McTavish), 1.9 2-5; Barrister (Hearn) and Gold Land (McLauchlin), 1,10 2-5; Corato (T. Green) and. Sir Reynard (Cameron), 1.8 2-5; Brahman (Hayvice) and Phaleron (McTavish), 1.9 1-5. Six furlongs: Persistence (Rhodes) and British Camp (Gilchrist), 1.25 3-5; Cherry’s Ticket (Gilchrist), 1.19 4-5; Ascot Bloom (Gilchrist), 1.23 2-5; Sir Dingle (Messervy) shaded Hot Shot (McLauchlin), 1.22 2-5; Silver Clarion (Hayvice), 1.22 1-5. „ Once round (under one mile) : Parthian Shot (McGill) and Night Hawk (D. Green), 1.54 2-5; Brazilian (McKinnon) beat Classic (Cameron), 1.50 3-5; Prival (Anderson), 1.51 1-5, Belsander (Markwick), leading him over the last six furlongs in 1,23 1-5. . Flylite (Hearn), after jumping hurdles well, ran six furlongs in 1.24 4-5. Knight of Australia (Hearn) gave a safe display over four, hurdles, afterward covering a round in 1.54. Rival (Pascoe) was sent over the steeplechase fences on the flat twice and acquitted himself well. White Chief (Turner) made a very creditable showing in a bout over hurdles, and Prince Rangi (Pascoe) gave a safe disP 1< Northlander (Turner) jumped four hurdles satisfactorily, showing more confidence.than he did on Saturday. Biscuit (O’Connor) went boldly in a bout over hurdles, fencing quickly and cleanly. He is in nice order and should have prospects at the spring meetings.
