DAMAGE TO MOUNTAIN HOSTEL
Weekend Gale At Egmont Dominion Special Service. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 9. Tearing off the roof of the 30-foot walk between two sections of the Dawson Falls Hostel on Mt. Egmont, a terrific gust of wind during the storm at the weekend hurled the roof upon a nearby chimney, which collapsed and fell through the roof. Visitors, who taxed the accommodation of the hostel, were caused considerable discomfort. A howling gale was blowing and torrential rain added to the misery of those who endeavoured to restore order. Rain poured into the bedrooms, which had to be vacated, and the manager of the hostel, Mrs. B. Valentine, and the staff, had to find new accommodation for the guests and to effect temporary drainage for the water that gushed into bedrooms. No personal injury was done, but damage to the building was extensive. The storm put the telephone line to the hostel out of order, and it was not till a returning taxi driver communicated with the Egmont National Park Board officials that it was known anything untoward had occurred at the hostel. Temporary repairs were made, by a party of workmen dispatched to the mountain.
