SWIFT REPAIR WORK
Damaged Vessels In
Britain
(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 25.
Repairs to vessels both in the Navy and the Merchant Marine have assumed greater importance than they possessed even in the last war because of the improvement iu the technique of shipbuilding. In the last war, if a ship was hit by a torpedo or a mine she almost invariably sank. Now, in the majority of cases, especially as regards warships, she is able to reach port after such a happening, and is immediately put under repair. That the Royal dockyards proceed with this work expeditiously is shown by the time taken to put destroyers back in service after the Dunkirk evacuation. In all, some 73 vessels received damage necessitating a visit to the dockyards. Some of these vessels were only in hand for a few days, and all were completely repaired within five weeks.
Though some dislocation has been caused by air attacks, the general level of the speed of repair work has not been greatly affected.
