RECENT FLOODS

Damage In Hutt County

SLIPS AND WASHOUTS The overseer, Mr. E. M. Campbell, reported to the Hutt County Council yesterday that general conditions were good during the month of January, but last week heavy rain with flood conditions were experienced in all ridings, particularly Mungaroa, Ilorokiwi, and ileretaunga. In Mungaroa heavy scouring of fords and road surfaces took place, and slips were in evidence in all parts of the riding. Slips and road scouring occurred ami washouts in the Silverstream and Moonshine areas of Ileretaunga. Bad road washouts, scouring and slips occurred in the .Moonshine and I’ahautantii-Paekaka-riki areas of Ilorokiwi. The other ridings suffered slip damage. The settlers of Mungaroa and the Whiteman’s Valley areas of Ileretaunga suffered considerable inconvenience in getting away their milk and stock, but general communication had now been restored. All staff was employed on restoration of flood damage.

In reply to a question, Lite overseer said that the road through the Moonshine Valley was now open to traffic. The chairman, Cr. S. Blackley, said that his allowance of benzine had been cut down to 10 gallons a month, and this did not give him much opportunity of inspecting a county GOO square miles in area. While admitting that every economy should be made, he considered it unfair that the chairman of a county council should be restricted to 10 gallons of petrol a month, when others were being allowed eight gallons a month for pleasure, and to go to race meetings. Cr. W. R. M. Bearce: You should get a push-bike.
