LABOUR FOR FARMS
Partial Resumption Of
Scheme
"Instructions have (been issued for full resumption of scheme 48, except in so far as is concerned the allocation of men who are considered likely to be placed on farm operational work in the near future,” said the Minister of Labour, Mr. Webb, in reply to an urgent question asked by Mr. Boswell (Government, Bay of Islands). Mr. Boswell asked if resumption of the scheme was intended, as it had been of considerable benefit to farmers generally.
Mr. Webb said that partial resumption of the scheme had been ordered last month, and 2885 men were now employed. Results obtained under the plan since April 1, 1910, showed how increased production had been helped. The stock increase was estimated as follows: —Sheep, 52,959; cows, 6241; cattle, 5170; pigs, 80. Work completed comprised scrub-cutting, 54,566 acres; gorse-grubbing, 14,980 acres; drains dug or deepened, 35,474 chains; fencing, 10,124 chains: bushfelling and stumping, 5174 acres. In addition, the great majority of the men had derived physical benefit and become efficient and willing workers.
