Night Flight
you go down to the woods al night, A shadow cast by lantern light? With no companion of human kind Could you pretend to be wholly blind To darkening forms and those creeping shapes— Night’s secret things: to the ghostly japes That play on you as you make your way, Despairing ever of light of day? a The owls would frighten you most oi ail If you at night heard their screeching call—“Tu whit, tn wlioo!” And they cry again, “To whit, tu whoo.” Then, no longer vain Of dignity, you would wheel and fly Away from the sound of that mournful cry, And far from sight of those eyes that glare Fixed green and gold in a baleful stare. —Miss Billy (17), Wellington.
