DORSET HORN SHEEP
The Dorset Horn is a breed that has gained great favour in Australia because of its exceptionally quick maturing properties. It is quite common for lambs to put on over lib. weight per day even after they have been weaned. Last season a farmer at Putaruru went away 400 Dorset Horn cross fat lambs, and, though they were only eleven weeks old, they returned the fine average of 41.51 b. with no seconds. The carcases .are square and very shapely, and of very even texture, while the fleece is finer than that of the usual Romney cross lamb. During the past two or three years Dorsets have been imported by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., for breeders in Southland, Canterbury, Auckland. Wellington, Marlborough and Waikato districts, and a great future for the breed is predicted under the favourable climatic conditions experienced in the Dominion.
