Sergeant Wareham’s Career
The news that Sergeant C. P. S. Wareham, of Wellington, who left with the Second Echelon, had been accidentally killed in action in England on September 30 was received with deep regret by his many friends. The youngest son of Mrs. Emily Wareham and the late Mr. Joseph Wareham, of Lyall Bay, Sergeant Wareham was a prominent Wellington sportsman before leaving Now Zealand with the sth Regiment, N.Z.A. He was for the past few years a regular member of the Wellington College Old Boys' first eleven and was such a dependable batsman that he represented Town against Country on more than one occasion and also participated in I’lunket Shield matches. That be had retained his batting form in England he proved byscoring 50 for a New Zealand team against an Australian eleven recently, and assisting E. W. Tindill, another Wellington batsman, to win the nmlch. He had the distinction of scoring a century in his first match in senior cricket, being at that stage a member of the Institute Old Boys’ Club.
Sergeant Wareham was also an active member of the Karori Golf Club, and was showing promising form at the royal and ancient game. Of a bright and cheerful disposition, he was very popular in athletic circles in Wellington.
