Treatment Of Aliens
Sir, —I am astounded to learn that though divisions of Austrians are fighting on the Western Front, an Austrian is not regarded as an “enemy alien,” and is not prevented from possessing fire-arms. Statements have appeared from time to time of the number of enemy aliens who have been interned, and also alarming statements have been published concerning the number of enemy aliens admitted into the Dominion within recent months. Today I learned that au Austrian subject arrived in New Zealand in December last, having in his possession two shot guns, one of which is an automatic, and that he is allowed to retain them in his possession. Surely, when Territorials and Returned Soldiers arc undergoing training to defend these shores in the event of an invasion,is incredible that an alien should be permitted to possess firearms which, to say the least, would be a grave danger in the event of ah emergency.—l am, etc., WAKE-UP.
