Reception In Montevideo
More than 2000 people attended a reception in Montevideo to Admiral Sir Henry Harwood, who commanded the successful engagement by three British cruisers against the Admiral Graf Spec.
Sir Henry, speaking in Spanish, thanked his hosts for their enthusiastic reception, and expressed satisfaction that his squadron had been able to do something for Uruguayan commerce. —By radio. SAFE RETURN Reconnaissance Flights Over Germany , (Received January 5. 11.55 p.m.) LONDON. January 5. The,Air Ministry announced that Air Force machines successfully carried out reconnaissance flights over north-western Germany. They patrolled over German seaplane bases in the Heligoland Bight. All returned safely. GERMAN DENIAL Reported Intimation To Sweden (Received January 5, 11 p.m.) LONDON, January 5. It is officially denied in Berlin that Germany intimated to Sweden not to remain neutral if Sweden allowed passage of Allies' war materials to Finland. HELP FOR TURKEY AND FINLAND (Received January 6, 12.50 a.m.) MELBOURNE, January 5. The Federal Government decided to grant £10,060 to the Turkish Government for earthquake relief and also £lO.OOO for • the Finnish Red Cross. Permission was also given for opening a public appeal for the Finnish Red Cross. Mr. Menzies said that as a result of the Finns’ gallant defence the appeal should commend itself to all Australians.
