CHASE THROUGH CITY

Evidence Of Stoker On H.M.S. Ramillies A chase through city streets on foot and by car was described in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, by Stoker AV. Brooks, of H.M.S. Ramillies, who was witness in a case in which Richard Sullivan, a labourer, aged 37, was charged with having stolen £22 in money from the person of Richard Sexton on Monday afternoon. Brooks said he was having a drink in a AYillis Street hotel about 4.45 p.m. on Monday witli two friends named Sexton and Haines. The party was joined by Sullivan, for whom, he understood, Sexton bought a drink. In doing so Sexton displayed a roll of banknotes which both witness and the barman had advised him to put away. Subsequently the men had left the bar. <■ AVitness said that, in consequence of something he was-told shortly afterward, he went into a billiard saloon nearby and saw Sullivan sitting near the door. He asked the defendant what he had taken from Sexton, but Sullivan said “Nothing.” They left the billiard saloon, and Sullivan suddenly took to his heels, with witness in pursuit. After chasing him to Dixon Street witness obtained a lift in a ear and eventually caught Sullivan in Herbert Street. He demanded that Sullivan should hand over the money which it was alleged had been taken from Sexton, In response, Sullivan pulled one a small roll of notes from his pocket and gave it to Brooks. They then entered the car, where witness saw defendant trying to hide another roll of notes under the seat. Brooks took charge of this money and subsequently handed both the money and Sullivan over to the police. Mr. J. B. Y r oung, who prosecuted, asked for a remand till January 9. The application was granted, Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., granted bail in the sum of £lOO, with two sureties of like amount.
