FIRE IN APOSTOLIC CHANCELLORY

ROME, January 1. Eire broke out shortly before midnight in the Apostolic Chancellery and in the/famous adjacent church of San Lorenzo. The fire brigades were hampered by bitterly cold weather and did not succeed in quelling the blaze till J a.m. The cupola of the chancellery crashed and most of one wing of the church was destroyed. Priceless tapestries and some frescoes in the chancellery are reported to have been completely ruined, but a number of art treasures were saved.
