WELCOME TO THE ROYAL NAVY

Wellington has had the unexpected privilege and pleasure of welcoming a first-class battleship of the Royal Navy. Many, of course, will recall the visits of the battle-cruisers New Zealand and Hood years ago. but the visit of a capital ship is an unprecedented event. ’ Needless to say the ship’s company arc assured of most cordial hospitality and entertainment during their stay in port. Ibis country’s esteem and affection for the “Silent Service” is strongly rooted both by tradition and by the public’s admiration for its exploits in the Great War and in the present conflict. The nation’s naval ardour, moreover, has been exalted by the participation of one of its own ships, Achilles, with two other light cruisers of the Royal Navy, in the gallant sea fight against the powerful German pocket-battleship Admiral Graf Spee. The graceful compliment paid our cruiser by H.M.S. Ramillics in displaying the signal. “Well done the Achilles,” on her arrival was deeply appreciated. It signified the spirit of comradeship and unity of purpose which animates the Royal Navy and the navies of the Dominions in upholding the traditions of our great sea Empire.
