SUPREME AUTHORITY IN TIME OF WAR

Australian Co-ordinating Committee (Received July 39, 7.5 p.iu.) SYDNEY, July 39. The creation of a national emergency co-ordination committee representing all Government departments and the special committees associated with national planning was announced by the Prime Minister, Mr. Menzies. The new body will be called the Standing Committee on the Co-ordina-tion of Interdepartmental Action on the Outbreak of War. Its duties will be to elaborate a system for co-ordinating defence service, Commonwealth departments and the State Government activities on the occurence of strained relations or the outbreak of war. The Minister of Defence, Mr. Street, said that the committee would be the supreme over-riding authority in the event of war. NATIONAL REGISTER Withdrawal Of Boycott SYDNEY, July 29. The South Australian and Queensland Trades and Labour Councils have adopted the recommendation by the Australian Council of Trades Unions that the boycott of the national register shall be abandoned. New South Wales having already accepted, the necessary majority of three States has been obtained, and the decision becomes binding on the affiliated unions, despite the adverse decision of the Victorian Trades Hall Council. AUSTRALIAN NAVY Review Of Conditions MELBOURNE, July 29. The Minister of Defence, Mr. G. A. Street, announced that the Naval Board had issued instructions that during the spring cruise a general review of service conditions would be made. The review would include questions of pay and allowances.
