Returned Soldiers' Dance

A largely attended and delightful invitation dance and social evening took place at the clubrooms of the Lower Hutt branch of the'Returned Soldiers’ Association on Saturday night. A glowing fire dispelled any hint of the cold and boisterous weather without, and vases of autumn-toned hydrangeas provided artistic decoration. Mr. W. Corlett and Mr. Elsmore were masters of ceremony, and those responsible for the arrangements were Mr. H. C. Williams, chairman; Mr. L. Buchanan, secretary and treasurer: Mr. and Mrs. N. Boyd, Mr. and Mrs. L Turner, and Mr and Mrs. J. Webster - Mesdames H. C. Williams, L. Buchanan and Mrs. S. Friis; Messrs. W. Corlett and Elsmore.

Mrs. R. S. Clark, who was accompanied by Miss Dorothy Spinks, sang several times, and Mr. Les Stapp, with Miss M. Keegan as his accompanist, also sang. Mr. Richard Burgess gave monologues.

Petone Towswomen’s Guild. Mrs. J. C. Burns, the vice-president, presided over the July meeting of the Petone branch of the New Zealand Townswomen’s Guild (Inc.), which was held in the Orange Mall. There was a large attendance of members and good progress hail been made by the various circles during the month. Mrs. Craig Mackenzie gave a talk ou drama, which was greatly appreciated, and the speaker was presented with a spray by Mrs. C. Fisher. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Coffey, L. Gould and E. J. Fuller.

Concert at Wesley Hail. Organized by the Methodist Centennial Appeal committee, Lower Hutt, a concert of a high standard was hold in Wesley Hall recently. The objective of the committee is to raise £lOOO to erect a new youth' 'building and a kitchen. The Rev. H. T. Peat, welcomed, the performers from Wellington, and at the close of the concert thanked them for the very fine entertainment. The committee afterward served supper for the performers. The programme was as follows: — Pianoforte and violin duet, Mr. and Mrs. B. Carter; play, “Her Second Husband,” the Hollinside Players; soprano solo, Mrs. McWhinnie; elocutionary item, Miss M. Manley; tenor solo, Mr. McNair; play, “The Magistrates' Court,’’ the Hollinside Players; baritone solo, Mr. H. Clarke; piano and violin duet, Mr. and Mrs. B. Carter; play, “In the Surgery,”- the Hollinside Players; elocutionary item, Mrs. Lewis Grant; soprano solo, Mrs. McWhinnie. Dance for Queen. A successful dance was held in the Hutt Railway Worshops dining-hall to further the interests of Miss Rona Burton, southern queen in the queen carnival .b:-iing held on behalf of the Municipal Band. During the evening the queens, Miss Burton, Miss Joy August and Miss Vivienne Platt were introduced to the audience. The committee responsible were Messrs. C. A. Strong, Tophanj, Unwick, Marshall, Thompson and Pritchard.
