AWAPUNI RACES

Manawatu Hunt Club Meeting LADY CALLAGHAN’S STEEPLECHASE Surprise On Flat By Flying Acre (By The Watcher.) Despite a rather threatening day with a bitterly cold and strong westerly wind, the annual meeting of the Manawatu Hunt Club, held at Awapuni on Saturday, was a great success. Large fields provided keen and interesting racing, several of the finishes being very close, and tne betting showed a substantial increase. With the large attendance, the policy ot the club in increasing stakes was amply justified. , ~ . The feature' event, the Hunt Cup Steeplechase, was won by Lady Callaghan, who is trained by her owner at Marton. She won well after a good exhibition of jumping. The other jumping race for hurdlers was won by the 1 rentham representative Toper. On the nat, the principal race, the Open Handicap, was won for Levin by Flying Acre, who was one of the outsiders. Favourites, in fact, had a poor innings, only one succeeding. This, however, did not prevent a big increase in turnover, the machine handling £15,833. against £9l2a/l% last July, an increase of £6io7/10/-. The going was very soft and slow after heavy rain during the morning. A feature of the day was the excellent starting of Mr. D. Stevens, the club s course superintendent, who also acts for the. Manawatu Trotting Club. It was his first trial with gallopers, and he was an outstanding success, his fields being well under control, and promptly and evenly dispatched. Lacan Atones. Lacan, who had not received the best of luck in the similar event at Marton the previous Saturday, won the Ladies Bracelet in handy style. He was never far away, and. taking charge in the straight, he had no difficulty in stalling off the challenges of the favourite, Hethers, and Moonlight Bay. who had a very keen struggle for second. Hethers had every chance, but ran a bit green. J.he second favourite. Gladium. was up in front early and did not finish on. KoniKa was fourth, but never likelv. nor was Ohanga, though the latter was in a good position till he weakened on the home turn. . . Surprise in Maiden. A big surprise was sprung in the large maiden field by the eleventh favourite Patahi who secured a narrow victory over Parian. Both these horses are trained on the track and they practically had the race to themselves, Parian making tne pace and being challenged in the straight bv Patahi, who just had the advantage in the last furlong. Modern Way was a poor third but she ran a fair race as she was a good way back early. Colibri wile fourth after being near the leader throughout and having every chance, and the favourite Flying Flag was next, She also was handy enough in running to have done better if good enough. The best of the others were The Smiler, who .ot a rheck at the half-mile, B auvette, Royal Sign and Amyas Leigh. Toper Wins. Well. Hunting Lore, who had caught the eye •f punters at Marton, was the favourite for the hurdles and he again endeavoured to win all the way. He gave another fine display of fast jumping out in front, though inclined to chance one or two 'fences, and was still going well coming to the last fence. Here, however, Lopei, who had lain handy throughout in fourtn berth, put in a claim. They were on terms at the last jump and though lopci mixed his gait for Jhe jump he recovered well and in a gruelling finish on the fiat he just had the advantage. Princess Isabel, who had been toward the rear if> most of the running, became more prominent on the home turn and she ran on into a creditable third from Bing Boy. who ran an improved race on Marton, being a possibility till the concluding stages. Hie others were outclassed and the Hastings winner Contact, after taking on Hunting, Lore for three fences, retired ignominiously from the contest. Toper showed likely form at Welliiioton and his win was due. He was admirably handled by the stable jockey R. A. Hawkings, who is a coming horseman at the jumping game. Lightweight-Outsider Scores. Another outsider in Flying Acre scored in the open Handicap, for which the favourites were El Meynell, ridden by Broughton, and Old Surrey. Both the latter had every chance. Old Surrey was never further back than second or third and El Meynell was also well placed in behind on the rails and they seemed to be going well approaching the straight, but neither was able to produce a finishing run. Lucullus Boy, Gay Chou, Liane and Flying Acre were also prominent in the running, though Gay Chou began to drift on the turn where Lady Montana mid Tidewaiter began to move forward. In the straight at least half a dozen had a chance, but over the last furlong it was clear that Flying Acre hnd the race won as he brilliantly drew clear. They closed on him again at the end, Gay Chou staging a great run home to beat Liane for second, with Tidewaiter finishing strongly into fourth place. Lucullus Boy, Lady Montana. Hunting Mint, Old Surrey and Cuisinier were next. A fea.ture was the fact that both winner and runner-up had their burdens lightened by the full apprentice allowance of 71b. Gay Chou, Tidewaiter and Lady Montana are all worth remembering for Riccarton. Tidewaiter was a long way back in the early running. Lucullus Boy ran a very creditable race for a first attempt in open company. Lady Callaghan’s Steeplechase. Royal King was the favourite for the Hunt Cup, but he failed to improve upon his Martoii showing and finished only fifth. It was a good race, keenly contested, and after Royal Toast had made all the running, he was first tackled by Glenvane and then by Lady Callaghan. Royal Tons-t was able to hold off Glenvane for a fence or twd, but once Lady Callaghan. who hnd been handy, made her run, the race was over. Glenvane hung on grimly over the last bit and was able to outstay Royal Toast for second, with Nightrunner fourth, then Royal King and the others beaten off. though a newcomer in Blue Steel in Knapp’s stable ran very well while his condition lasted. Only Favourite To Score. Aurora’s Star, in winning the hack cup, earned the distinction of being the only favourite to win on the day. 'She did so iu characteristic style, finishing very solidly, and she had to do her best in the straight to head a rank outsider in Hunting Moments, a sister to Hunting Mint, who was always dangerous. As anticipated the distance proved beyond the stamina of most of the others. Little Robin and Mother-in-Law being well back in third and fourth positions, followed by Haile Selassie, Warehi, Royal Tinge, Auto Sweep and Peach King. Auto Sweep was a well-backed second choice, but while he ran on at the end he was always too far back to be dangerous at any stage. Consistency Rewarded. Screen Star reaped the reward of consistency by winning handily in the concluding hack sprint. He was always pro-

minent and though Te Ore came at him in the run home, she was not equal to getting up. Shining Hours ran an improved race, being always one of the leaders, and «he may be returning to form. Liberal's Mint, who was the favourite, ran another honest race for fourth, and the best of the others were Girl Pat, Raeburn, Hagen and Maturity. Girl Pat drew 18 and was responsible for a good effort, as also was Hagen, who was slow to find his feet Raeburn looks a likely improver.
