SHOOTING GALLERY FATALITY
Coroner’s Comments At Inquest On Boy By Telegraph—Press Association. WANGANUI, July 27. A verdict that death was caused by internal haemorrhage following a .22 bullet wound in the chest, accidentally inflicted by Basil Devear Matthews, was returned by the coroner, Mr. S. M. Dixon, at an inquest into the death of Eric Charles Hawkins, which occurred in a shooting gallery last Saturday. The coroner commented that from the evidence he was satisfied that the boy Matthews honestly believed that the rille was unloaded. There was no suspicion of malicious intent. The coroner suggested that instructions in the handling of firearms should be included in the school curriculum. He said that two points eor.ld not be emphasized too strongly—never point a rifle at a person and handle firearms on the assumption that they are loaded.
