WOMEN’S HOCKEY

Representative Trial Match COMMENT ON PLAY (By Celtic.) The senior A women’s hockey trial match to select Wellington’s team for the Dominion tournament, opening in Marlborough uext month, will be held next Saturday, when the senior A selector, Miss C. M. Wilkins, will spend a busy afternoon.

Hutt United’s Loss. An ex-Marlborough player, Mrs. M. Robinson, who, has been playing exceptionally sound hockey at right-half tor Hutt United returned to Marlborough yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Robinson has resided in Wellington for more than six months, aud has been an asset to the United team. Before coming to Wellington Mrs, Robinson was a member of the successful Arotea team, which holds an almost unassailable position iu this years Marlborough senior championship.

Bright Individualists. Training College senior A have some bright individualists in Misses N. Spiers and Green. Both worked exceptionally hard last week, but lacked sufficient support. Miss Spiers, however, inclines to wander too much, but this is probably the result of lack of confidence in her team-mates. As a team, however, Training College have improved, and they played a clean type of hockey.

Senior Play and Players. Though hampered by a severe cold, Miss R. Walker, full-back, defended well for C.O.G. last week. Miss J. Yeatman, inside left, worked very hard, endeavouring to help her substitute wing and play her own position as well. Miss Yeatman is a willing worker at any time. Miss M. Black, T.O.G. 11 inside-right, played well last week. Vastly-improved form was.shown by Miss M. Matherson, left wing, and her goal was a credit to her. Miss E. Roil, left back, cleared well and played soundly. Improved goalkeeping was shown by Miss M. Barnard, Hutt Valley, against United. Miss M. Smith did not relish the conditions at right back, but her partner, Miss D. Wornall, gave a sound display. Miss W. Hoare, right wing, showed to advantage in the first half, but her play deteriorated slightly as the ground became heavy. Miss E. Peterson, inside left, was always prominent in the atttacks, as also were Misses M. Owens, centre, and H. Manihera, left wing. The Wilson-McLellan-Lamat>on combination was used rather a lot on Saturday, and it worked well. Lower Grades.

The Technical A-St. Joseph’s intermediate match was quite a good game. Technical continue to improve and will be hard to beat for championship honours. St. Joseph’s failure rested mainly in lack of following up. Miss J. Prestney, Technical centre half, used good judgment in her support to the forwards, and her four goals were all well merited. Y.W.C.A.’s junior left wing, Mrs. E. Twort, led most of her team’s offensives last week, making some beautiful openings. The inside and centre, Misses T. Mansfield and P. Grant, worked in well with her. . . Petone T.O.G. juniors have a promising centre forward in Miss E. Collins. She drew attention by her good work on Saturday. * Petone Technical and C.O.G. intermediates provided a fast game for this grade. Petone’s right wing appeals as a promising player, and Miss B. Stewart, C.O.G. centre, was an outstanding forward. Notable improvement was shown by Maranui and Technical B intermediates last week, the only goal of the match being the result of fast following up. Both forward lines played well, but Technical were inclined to play offside at critical moments.
