SCENES OF FARMING LIFE
•The Shepherd’s Farm,” by Adrian Bell (London: Cobden-Sanderson).
To anyone with an interest in scenes of farming life this novel should prove absorbing. Mr. Adrian Bell is adept at describing everyday country activities with accuracy and charm. He writes of a young shepherd who acquires a small farm and, with the help of the woman he marries, makes a success of it. Their hopes gradually centre on their son. He, however, makes an unsuitable marriage and later loses his farm in a bankruptcy which involves his parents, so that all of their must give up ownership and return to working for others. Mr. Bell’s characterizations are not particularly strong, and chief interest lies in the farming descriptions. Fortunately they are so well done that it is well worth reading the rather insipid narrative for their sake alone.
