OBITUARY

Mr. J. Cooper The death, occurred in Talhape of Mr. John Cooper, Raukura, at the age of 74 years, says a “Domiiiiou” Special Service message. Boru in Gladstone, Walrarapa, Mr.. Cooper settled in the Talhape district in 1889. He was first employed on Ngamatea Station, and then moved on to Erewhon Station, where for two years he looked after the back country, known as Mutumatai. He entered the employ of Mr. T. Batley, and remained with him for 14 years, and then moved on to the Pukeokahu district, near the Rangitikei River, and afterward managed a property up the Wanganui River. Returning to the Taihape district after his marriage to Miss Maud Myrtle Northover in Petone, Mr. Cooper was appointed manager of Mr. M. Morrison’s farm, Pokaka. Following Mr. Morrison’s return from abroad Mr. Cooper took charge of Mr. T. A. Duncan’s Ngala property, where he remained till he took tip farming on his own account at Raukura. He was greatly interested in sheepdog trials, and in addition to participating in them himself with his dog Glen, which won mauy prizes, he gave several cups for competition. He was a keen supporter of the Moawhango Collie Club. He leaves a widow and four sons and two daughters—Messrs. John. Kenneth, Gordon and Robert Cooper, and Mrs. K. Broadbelt (Wellington) and Miss Freda Cooper. Mr. L. Redward The death occurred in Napier, at the age of 89 years, of Mr. Leicester Redward, an old identity of Hawke’s Bay, says a “Dominion”. Special Service message. Born in Portsmouth, England, in 1850, Mr. Redward arrived in New Zealand in the barque Maria in 1863, and took up his residence at the Lake Station, which was- then owned by his brothers. He lived in Hawke’s Bay till 1896, when he moved to Gisborne, where he served with the firm of Williams and Kettle Ltd., till his retirement in 1830, since when he had lived in Napier with his daughter, Mrs. G. G. Chisholm. In his earlier years he took a keen interest in the volunteer movement, and was one of those responsible for the formation of a cadet corps in Gisborne. Later he pioneered the Boy Scout movement in.the district, holding the position of district commander of Poverty Bay Boy Scouts and Commissioner for Northern Hawke’s Bay. Mr. J. McGovern The death occurred yesterday morning of Mr. James McGovern, a well-known resident of Mauriceville, at the age of 61 years, says a “Dominion ’ Special Service message. Mr. McGovern had been in ill-health for the past three years. He resided for many years In Mauriceville, where he was engaged it. fanning. He was a prominent member of the Lansdowne Church, and for many years was on the committee. Mr. W. J. Seater The death occurred in a private hospital recently of Mr. William John Seater. of W. J. Seater and Co., typewriter agents. Born at Kumara, Mr. Seater first entered business in Palmerston North, but about 25 years ago he came to Wellington and commenced business there. He was a man of retiring habits but had a large circle of friends in the province. He leaves a widow and two daughters (one by a previous marriage), and two sisters. Mrs. 11. M. Broadbelt. Otaki, and Miss B. E. Seater, Auckland. Mr. H. Franklin The death occurred recently at bls residence. Northland, of Mr. Harry Franklin, at. the age of 67 years, after a sudden attack of pneumonia.
