CHRISTCHURCH HUNT CLUB

Difficult Problems For Investors

REVIEW OF FIELDS AND PROSPECTS

Dominion Special Service CHRISTCHURCH, July 28. The annual steeplechase meeting of the Christchurch Hunt Club, to be held on the Riccarton racecourse tomorrow, promises to attract a large attendance, including several North Island visitors. The programme is a most attractive one, probably the best from a quality point of view presented by the club for many years. The track will not be soft and should.provide firm going for both flat racers and jumpers. The main interest in the days proceedings will be centred in the three open events, the Hoipeby Steeplechase, the Longbeach Hurdles, and the Brabazon Handicap. , _ Of eight acceptors for the Homeby Steeplechase, seven at least are assured of strong support. Though Padishah impressed by his schooling on Wednesday, and this was after some sterling work over Hastings fences, he is likely to be careful over the early fences, and, with some smart jumpers in the field, such as Gold Wren, Burwood and Slayer, he may have to give them too big an advantage over the concluding stages. Power Chief and Manawatu form a strong bracket, and are likely to be on hand at the right end Slayer did 'well at Trentham, but his attempt over the bigger country he will encounter here will, have to be awaited. Gold Wren is certain to help toward fast time, but the journey will probably find him out. Cottingham, if ridden into his fences, should show prominence through? out. Burwood is a polished fencer, and can be depended upon for a, solid effort. Uncle Jim reads better in his earlier engagement. Class is strongly represented in the Longbeach Hurdles, and half of the number carded can be recommended for support, these including King Rey, Travenna, Recollection, Aussie Ra. Araboa and Mount Vai, while Last Link and Vantoon are likely lightweights. The Brabazon Handicap contains most of the fancied candidates for the Winter Cup, and speculation is certain to take a wide range. Again a majority of the field are entitled to serious consideration, and, with a firm track, a fast seven-fur-long gallop should be recorded. The Maiden Stakes, the Camla HackHandicap. and the Kennels Hack Handicap, will all have, large fields, and the two hunters’ events, though not well filled, should prove interesting contests. Because they were not being shipped south last , night, Lord Cavendish, Lustra! and Dungarvan were withdrawn at 12.30 o’clock today for tomorrow’s engagements. The win and place system will be in use, and the following horses are likely to be well supported:—

Christchurch Hunt Cup—Macalpein, Newly Rich.

Lafword Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase —El Caballo, Maeplpein, Top Rank. .Maiden' Stakes—Lord Midas, Nigger Boy. Lights Out.
