MANAWATU HUNT

Fields At Awapuni Today

HUNT CUP STEEPLES AND OPEN HANDICAP Form And Prospects (By The Watcher.) Excellent fields in all events will parade at the annual meeting of the Mana; watu Hunt Club, to be held at Awapuni today. The weather has cleared and prospects for today are favourable. With a drying wind all yesterday, the track should be in good order. ,The feature event is the Manawatu Hunt Cup Steeplechase, which has drawn a field of 11. including two recent Hunt Cup winners in Glenvane and Royal Toast, and the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase winner, Wykemist. . On the flat the principal race is the Open Handicap, which contains a Winter Cup candidate in Lady Montana, and also others with engagements at the Grand National meeting. All the other races have filled exceptionally well, and the meeting should be most successful. Ohanga, who heads the list in the Bracelet, is also in the hurdle race. He •was a fair flat performer at his best and would have a good chance here. Recent form points to Kohika, Gladium and Lacan. Ltictto, who won at Hastings, was not too luckv at Marton last Saturday. though Gladium won very well there. Ruenzori and Hethgrs might show up. Although the maiden field is large there is not a great deal of form. It may be worth remembering the solid support for Split Second at Marton las. Saturday, despite the fact that she ran a poor race. The Smiler showed a lot ot pace there and finished fourth, so he should improve. Flying Flag is another likely improver. Parian has pace, and while he does not run on overwell he cannot neglected. Royal Sign may improve with his race at Marton, and Mooradabad is bred to be good. She had racing experience earlier in the season. Another well-bred one is Modern Way, a three-year-old filly by Lord Qu ex out ot a sister to Pink Coat. She carries the well-known Hunting Cry and Sporting Blood colours, and ran a fair race at Hastings this month. . i Marton running points to Hunting Lore in the hack and hunters’ hurdles, but Bing Boy might improve and Contact has his Hastings win to recommend him. Loper ran very well at Wellington and Ohanga, Princess Isabel, The Trump and Trigreterre should be possibilities. On Wellington form Lady Montana and Old Surrey are outstanding in the Open Handicap, but Tidewaiter, Hunting Mint, El Meynell and Liane arc all recent form prospects. El Meynell’s hack form is good and he should make the grade. Winsome Lu may improve with her race last Saturday. . „ Glenvane is not brilliant but he is a stayer and a safe jumper and B j'°hld be hard to beat in the Hunt Cup. 1 rdbably his most dangerous opponent will be-the Hastings winner Royal Toast, who has great pace and is a good jumper., He aid not stay well last winter, but ms Liastings performance was an outstanding one. Petrarch is a steeplechase winner but he has not raced for a long tune, while his bracketed mate. Nigh (runner won a point to point at Pahiatiia. w ykemist would be a good prospect were he sound. He might be dangerous, as he schooled well at Hastings on ihursday morning after getting warmed up. Royal King must have a chance on his recent form. . „ , „ The field of hacks in the Hack Cup is not strong. Royal Tinge has had only one recent race, in a sprint at Dannevirke He may have improved. Seyfried should have a chance, but the likeliest form seems to be that of Aurora's Star, Peach King, Haile Selassie and Little Robin. Gladium must also have a chance here it started in preference to the Bracelet, aS he stays well, and it will probably be found that the 10 furlongs will beat the majority of the field. There are some smart hacks in the coneluding event and plenty of recent form. Lord Moutoa, Liberal's Mint, Flying Acre, Screen Star, Lindrum and Te Ore ill have good prospects. Hagen is a good horse, but he ran badly in his only recent start at Hastings and is probably in need of more racing. Shining Hours was backed on Saturday last at Marton but failed and will have to make considerable improvement to reach a collide of improvers like Liberal’s Mint and Te Ore, who were well clear of her on Saturday. Cherry Picker should have a chance, and Girl Pat looks like a dangerous lightweight. Betting will be single pool. The following horses may bo supported in their engagements" Ladies’ Bracelet: Gladium and Lacan. Maiden Race: The Smiler and Flying Flag. ' .
