Reference Work For Next Fifty Years PROGRESSING SLOWLY Work on the Centennial Atlas, perhaps the most important contribution of the National Historical Committee to the centennial commemorations, is proceeding slowly. A vast amount of research work is involved, apart from the tremendous task of preparing and printing what will probably foun the standard geographical, historical and economic reference volume for the next half-century. Ten or a dozen sections have been completed by the draughtsmen of the Lands and Survey Department, who are carrying out this portion of the work. About, eight more are in hand, and there are still a score or so to be begun. Eight skilled draughtsmen are engaged on the maps, arid five research workers are assisting in the preparation of the material. Every phase of New Zealand history and development, as well as of modern life in the Dominion, will be portrayed on the maps, which will even include the canoe voyages of the Polynesians, the tribal wars and raids of pre-pakeha days, and the landing places, of the famous canoes of the Maori migration. Manv modern maps will be included, including a detailed map of every part of the country, weather maps, and maps illustrating primary and secondary production and the natural resources of the Dominion.

The atlas is not expected to be published till the latter part of next year.
