MARINE BATTLE
Fight Between Whale And Thrashers A thrilling tight between a whale and several thrashers was seen by passengers on the Maunganui which returned to Auckland yesterday morning from a cruise to the South Sea Islands. Last Saturday just before reaching Noumea, passengers’ attention was drawn to a great churning of the sea on the starboard bow, when it was seen that a whale was being attacked by at least two thrashers. As the Maunganui left the scene the thrashers were still relentlessly attacking their enemy. It is said that the thrashers are partial to the tongue of the whale. Their objective is to close up the blowhole of their opponent byleaping on it, thus causing it, in its efforts to breathe, to put out its tongue, which is Immediately set upon by the other thrashers.
