MATCHES IN MINE
Court Fines Worker By Telegraph—Press Association. GREYMOUTH, July 28. Valentine Harvey was fined £2/10/in the Magistrates’ Court, this morning for having matches in his possession in the Dobson Mine on July 21. Defendant eaid he was unaware that the matches were in his pocket. The prosecution said that miners had been warned of the danger of such practices because of gas in the mine. Previous prosecutions apparently had had no effect. A substantial penalty was requested. Mr. Ferner, S.M., said it should be unnecessary to impress miners with the necessity of ensuring their own safety. He took into consideration that the defendant was young and had been employed in the mine only three weeks. As the result of the dismissal of Harvey by the manager last Friday, miners refused to work. Negotiations were deferred pending the result of Court proceedings.
