Increase In Net Revenue IMPROVED POSITION An increase in net revenue of £131,4G2 over tiie same period last year is shown in the latest railway working return, which covers the period from April 1 to June 2-1, 1939. In reviewing tiie preliminary figures for the four-weekly period ended June 24, the Minister of Railways, -Mr. Sullivan, said yesterday:— "Tiie gross revenue for the period amounted to £712,497, compared with £631,234 for the corresponding period of last year, tin increase of £81,263. The working expenses increased by £2O 958, from £657.943 to £678,001, leaving an improvement in the net revenue position for the four weeks of £61,205. “For the year to da.e,” said the Minister, “that is, from April 1 to June 2-1, the gross revenue shows an increase of £190,336, the difference between £2,107.480 in 1935, and £2,297,816 in 1939. though there is one day less in the accounting period for 1939. “The working expenses for the year to date over the same period increased by £58,874. from £1,982.094 to £2.940,968, leaving an increase in net revenue of £131,462. which rose from £125,386 in 193 S to £256,848 in 1939.
“The improved revenue position is being fully maintained during the three weeks of the July period which, in the department’s experience, is the slackest revenue month of the year,” concluded Mr. Sullivan.
