Americans Worried In Seabright Tourney • (Received July 27. 7.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 26. At the Seabright lawn tennis tournament, the elimination of the Wimbledon champion, R. L. Riggs, today by a comparatively unknown player, Frank Guernsey, of Florida, 7-5, 6-4, and E. T. Cooke’s elimination by a 17-year-old Californian, Jack Kramer. 6-3, 6-4, cast a gloom over the American Davis Cup selectors. Other seeded players who fell by the wayside included G. Mulloy, who was beaten by D. McNeill, 7-5, 7-5, and S. B. Wood, who lost to J. Hunt, 7-5, 7-5. W. Sabin beat the Czech Davis Cup player L. Hecht, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3; F. A. Parker beat F. X. Shields, 6-2, 6-2; J. H. Doeg beat M. Buxby, 7-5, 6-4; B. M. Grant beat J. 11. Crawford (Australia). 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Crawford’s tennis was extremely spotty and, while time after time he drove the American hard, the latter, with his traditional tirelessness, returned everything he could reach. In the men's doubles, Crawford and Quist (Australia) beat Edwards and Bickel, 6-2, 7-5, entering the quarterfinals. Mako and Sabin advanced two rounds, defeating Grant and Alloo in the second round, 3-6, 7-5, 8-6, when they were a point from defeat. Crawford and Mrs. Rice-Johnson defeated the Californians, Edwards and Miss Wolfenden, 6-2, 6-4. Crawford and Quist will play Doeg and Mulloy tomorrow. NEW TENNIS BALL Whiskers Too Long, Says Crawford (Recehw.'d 'July 27, 7.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 26. The Australian tennis player Jack Crawford has joined the Americans who are complaining about the long nap on the 1939 United States ball. Holding one by the whiskers, he told a grinning circle “this thing needs shearing. All tins fuzz slows it up so that you can’t get a good whack at it." The new ball continues to elicit much discussion. The Australians and Rigg and Cooke are agreed In declaring it harder to control than the English ball, being too heavy and absorbing moisture from the turf, making “put away” shots impossible. VANCOUVER TOURNEY (Received July 27, 7.5 p.m.) VANCOUVER, July 26. In the Western Canada championships, Bromieh and Ilopman (Australia) defeated Oscar Roels and James Gavin (Vancouver), 6-1, 6-0, in the second round of the doubles.
