Between Anticyclone And Depression

Following is the weather report and the forecast for wind and seas issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, for the 24 hours ending 3 p.m. today:— ~ . . General situation: The Dominion still lies between an anticyclone to the west and a deep disturbance to the east, but pressure gradients have decreased somewhat. Forecast: Winds moderate to strong south-westerly to westerly, probably still reaching gale force at times in some exposed positions, but moderating gradually. Later tending north-wes-terly in parts of the South Island. Seas (N.Z. waters) : Rough north of Kawhia and in the far south; otherwise mainly moderate, but with a considerable swell on the east coast south of East Cape. Eastern Tasman Sea: Strong southwesterly winds and rough seas.

Wellington: Cold, fine, and sunny, after a sprinkling of snow during the night, A moderate south-west breeze turned north-west in the afternoon. Minimum temperature Wednesday night 32.8, maximum yesterday 48.6, and at 3 p.m. 45.7 deg.; barometer, 1001.1 millibars, 29.563 in.

Palmerston North: Sunny skies followed an early morning fall of snow. Later there were occasional showers, the weather improving toward noon.

New Plymouth: A sharp frost was followed by bright sunshine; cold, light south-westerly wind. Barometer at 5 p.m., 1002.3 millibars. Wanganui: Fine but very cold; sea rough; barometer, 1002.6 millibars. Napier and Hastings: After a ninedegree frost the day was fine and sunny with a freezing southerly of moderate strength. The night was very cold. Masterton: After a very heavy fall of snow overnight, the sun broke through. Light southerly wind.

'lVaipukurau: A very hard frost of 13deg. was recorded. An occasional burst of sunshine throughout the day, but exceedingly cold. Barometer at 7 p.m., 1000.6 millibars; maximum temperature, 46deg. Auckland: Early morning temperatures were the lowest of the winter and snow fell in many parts. The morning was fine and sunny, but showers were experienced in the afternoon, the wind being fresh .from the south-south-west. Maximum temperature, 50dtg. Barometric pressure had a rising tendency, the reading- at 5 p.m. being 29.74 in., 1007 millibars.

Christchurch: Two inches of snow, which fell overnight, melted rapidly under bright sunshine, which was almost uninterrupted till late afternoon, when the sky clouded over. There was a light south-west wind. Maximum temperature, 42deg. Barometer at 5 p.m., 998.6 millibars.

Dunedin: Though no snow fell in Dunedin, conditions remained unpleasantly cold and raw. The sky was heavily overcast and occasional showers of rain fell. Moderate south-westerly breeze. Maximum temperature, 48deg. Barometer fairly steady in the vicinity of 1000.6 millibars.
