Institution Of Engineers
In April last the New Zealand Institution of Engineers prepared a very thorough register, which was signed by 388 members from all parts of New Zealand, offering their services in the event of a national emergency. The register Includes not only the personal details but also the professional qualifications of those cowerned, and complete details of their practical experience as engineers. This register would be invaluable when selecting engineers for special appointments in time of war, or for special duty in any other emergency.
“I would like to express to Mr. A. J. Baker, president of the institution, and to those members of the institution who have completed the register, my appreciation of their public-spirited action in making this offer, which places at our disposal engineering talent equal to any which could be assembled in any part of the Empire, outside the United Kingdom," said the Minister of Defence, .Mr. Jones, in an interview yesterday. The institution has also set up branch committees in tin; various military districts to give practical assistance in preparing plans for local defences.
