SENSATIONAL BOXING

Jarvis Knocks Ont Summers RIGHT CROSS IN FOURTH ROUND Jack Jarvis, Eltham, former professional lightweight boxing champion of the Dominion, showed a return to form by knocking out Harry Summers, Auckland, the former Australian, in the fourth round of a contest billed for 12 rounds under the auspices of the Wellington Boxing Association at the Town Hall last night. A well-filled house saw some clever boxing in the first three rounds, both men showing good footwork, and using the ring cleverly to keep out of trouble. Summers made effective play with a left hook early, and had the advantage close in, but Jarvis evened up with a heavily-loaded right, which did damage each time it landed. They warmed to it in the fourth round, in which Summers scored with two solid left hooks to tile head in quick succession. This seemed to be the spur which Jarvis needed, as he retaliated with a right cross, which jerked Summers’ head back sharply, The well-filled house roared with excitement, as they freely mixed it in midring, and the end came with dramatic suddenness when Jarvis sent over a perfectly-timed right cross which caught the Australian as he was moving in. Summers lay like a dead man long after the referee, Mr. •P. Thompson, had counted to 10. There were cries for a doctor, but Summers at last came to, and was able to leave the ring unassisted. Jarvis showed that he was back to his best form, as he was aggressive and eonfiddht throughout, and showed speed and condition. Jarvis sealed 9st. 81b., and Summers 9st. 51b. They showed some bright boxing from the first gong. Summers scored with a good straight left, 'but Jarvis eame back with a two-handed barrage, which wrestled Summers off his feet. Summers was warned for kidney punching in the second session. Jarvis scored a right to the body, and booked a left to the face, but Summers evened up by doing better in the close work. Two clever defensive boxers were in action, and it was difficult to land a telling blow. Summers landed a solid right cross in the third round, but this brought a spirited two-handed attack from Jarvis. "Come on, give us something.” called someone from the audience, as they sparred round for an opening. The pair responded in spirited fashion in the fourth round, and the crowd seethed with excitement. Summers _ began with two snappy left-hooks, but this stung Jarvis to retaliate with a solid right cross to the head. The pace was too fast to last, and a sudden termination came when Jarvis landed fair on the point with a right cross which had his shoulder behind it. . Though the contest was. so brief, the big crowd were well satisfied that they had received full value for their money, as both men provided plenty of action while the bout lasted. Amateur Preliminaries. p. Wardle (Tracy’s), list. 71b., outpointed T. Gollop (Railways), list.. 101 b., in a hard slugging bout.
