HERBACEOUS BORDERS
What To Do When Soil Sinks Away From Plants The soil in autumn-planted herbaceous borders invariably sinks a little during winter. In light soil the plants usually sink, too, but in heavy they don’t do so, with the result that the crowns actually show’ above the level. This is an unhealthy condition and the plants cannot establish themselves. ’ Don’t disturb the plants concerned, or you will interfere with the roots that have formed since you planted. Draw soil up to the plants to cover the crowns I in. Then fork 3 or 4in. deep between the plants, at the same time working in a 2oz. per square yard dose of freshlyslaked lime.
