Repertory Society To Play Current London Success
PREPARATIONS are being made by 1 the Wellington Repertory Theatre for the production of “Dear Octopus,” under the direction of Mr. Leo du Chateau, commencing on September 5. Twice seen by Queen Mary and suite and still playing to crowded houses in London with Marie Tempest, John Gielgud, Kate Cutler and Leon Quarterniaine in the leading parts, Dodie Smith’s three-act comedy, “Dear Octo pus” promises to be even a more popular success than were her four previous plays, “Autumn Crocus,” •'Service,” “Call It a Day" and “Bonnet Over the Windmill.” Two of these have been seen in Wellington, “Autumn Crocus" being presented by the Wellington Repertory Theatre, and “Call It a Day” by the Thespians. But it is believed that the presentation of “Dear Octopus” by the Repertory Society while it is still being played in London by the original company will create a precedent.
The action of “Dear Octopus” takes place in the Randolphs' country house in North Essex during a weekend in late autumn. The occasion is the golden wedding celebration of Dora and Charles Randolph at which there are assembled four generations of the family whose ages range from seven mouths to 70 years. Amiable bickering, discussion of private family affairs, sentimental reminiscences and delightful comedy situations develop the various themes. “The final scene,” wrote a London critic, "with the 15 characters grouped round the table as Nicholas delivers the toast, 'Here’s To The Family’—that dear octopus from whose tentacles we can never escape, nor in our inmost hearts, do we ever wish to, provides a moving climax to a wholly enchanting Slight in the theatre."
