George Formby's Latest Comedy Arrives
TUST arrived in New Zealand, and already endorsed by Australian theatre executives as one of the outstanding potential- comedy hits of the year, “Trouble Brewing” is the latest George Formby starring vehicle. As in his previous films, each of which was a notable success, George Formby has a part which allows for complete exploitation of his unique talents. He is cast as a compositor, tied to his type fonts and chafing under the exigency of only recording the news of the day in a second-hand manner. In a desperate effort to further his ambitions to make headline news as a great detective, and also cultivate a romance with the editor's secretary, he ventures along a pathway of thrills and humour that leads him into a variety of scrapes that aspire to the highest levels of extreme farce. The racecourse, a brewery, a police station and other scenes of action add to George’s hectic career In the newspaper office, while the gamut of his activities runs from casting boroscopes to allin wrestling and the innocent kidnapping of’a chief of police. George Formby himself was responsible for the composition of several of the song numliers in “Trouble Brewing,” two of these having already won popularity in England following radio broadcasts by the Lancashire star.
