DANTE ALIGHIERI SOCIETY
The rooms of the Dante Alighieri Society, Wellington, were the scene of a cheerful gathering on the occasion of the fortnightly meeting of the society, which was presided over by Dr. B. d’Acunzo, Consul for Italy. As usual the first hour was devoted to the study of the language. The entertainment arranged by Signor A. Comparini was of a high standard and was greatly appreciated by the large number of members present. The programme was opened by Signor Comparini and Signora Barsi with, a dialogue entitled “Della terra e della lima,” by Giocomo Leopardi. A short sketch was read by Signora Barsi and Signor M. Barsi on the life and work of Jacobo della Quercia, the great sculptor, the fourth centennial anniversary of whose death was recently commemorated. Mrs. Kayward sang “Quando m’en vo” (“La Boheme”) and “O mio babbino caro” (Gianni Schicchi), and Mr. Diamond “11 ritratto" (Donaudy) and “Santa Lucia” (Neapolitan Barcarolle), both singers receiving well deserved applause. Miss Gieseking acted as accoinpaniste and contributed two pianoforte solos, “Venetian Regatta” (Liszt) and Chopin’s Waltz in E minor.
