Conference In Wellington Released from some pressure of business by the unusually cold weather, the New Zealand wholesale ice cream manufacturers began their annual conference in Wellington yesterday. Opening the conference, the mayor of Wellington, Mr. Hislop, said that it struck him as somewhat extraordinary that a gathering of business men representing the ice cream industry should assemble at this time of the year, and on such a day to advertise their products. He had thought that only businesses such as the Wellington City Council electricity department did well in this weather. On the other hand, it was expected that at the time of the Centennial Exhibition there would be an enormous amount of ice cream consumed. There was £750,000 invested in the ice cream industry in New Zealand, and it was still growing. Inviting the delegates to visit the site of the Centennial Exhibition, the mayor said that business men from other parts who had already done this were amazed at the size of the buildings and the stage of development reached. As far as the exhibition company was concerned, everything would be ready by opening day and he trusted that the same would be the position with all exhibitors. Mr. F. H. Wright (Christchurch) presided over the conference. There were 36 delegates present from the North and South Islands. This executive was elected: —President, Mr. F. H. Wright (Christchurch), unopposed; Messrs. A. Lamont (Wanganui), F. Wise (Gisborne), N. W. Smith (Napier), L. Malaghan ’•Wellington) ; secretary, Mr. H. R. Ayers. , The conference is proceeding.
