Austria Declares War (From “The Dominion,” July SO, 1014.) How the declaration of war by AustriaHungary on Servia-was made and received is shown in the following messages:— Budapest, July 28: Count Tiza, the Hungarian Prime Minister, speaking in the Lower House, said that what was wanted now were deeds, not words. The whole country was enthusiastic and would continue the fight till the honour of the nation had been vindicated, and future peace assured. Count Apponyi, on behalf of the Opposition, expressed confidence in Austria’s action. Parliament was prorogued amid wild enthusiasm. London. July 28: The Newcastle coal market is receiving orders for coal from Germany and Russia, who are begging merchants to speed up the contracts. Vienna, July 29: Count Leopold Berchtold. Foreign Minister, in the Oflicial Gazette, announces that Servin not having given a satisfactory reply. AustriaHungary finds it necessary to safeguard her rights and interests to have recourse to force of arms. Austria announces that she will adhere to The Hague Convention of October IS, 1908. and the Declaration of London of February 26, 1909, if Servia docs similarly. London, July 29: The disposition of the destroyers, submarines and aircraft is being altered, and the actual positions are being kept secret. Arrangements have been made for the protection of magazines, oil reserves, wireless stations, shipyards, and coal depots generally. Precautionary measures of a wide scope are being taken.. Berlin. July 29: Despite denials, it is palpable that far-reaching precautionary dispositions of troops are in progress. The military Zeppelin has been dispatched to Posen. The fleet has been ordered to return to Keil. St. Petersburg. July 29: Austria’s declaration of war was made publicly known late in the evening. Many thousands cheered the announcement wildly through the main streets, and made friendly demonstrations outside the British Embassy and elsewhere. A 'strong opinion prevails that in the event of an all-enveloping war England will actively support Russia and Franco.
