JAYWALKER FINED
Failed To Heed Warning By Inspector By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 26. Jaywalking in Queen Street was the subject of a prosecution by the city traffic department in the Magistrates’ Court. The pedestrian concerned was Hans Andersen, a middle-aged man, who ad= mitted a charge of failing to cross the street at right angles. Prosecuting, Mr. C. Bland, city traffic superintendent, said the offence occurred at 8.40 a.m. on June 23. Defendant crossed Queen Street diagonally at the Customs Street intersection. The traffic officer on point duty spoke to the defendant and warned him of his action. “Apparently defendant did not take the matter seriously,’’ added Mr. Bland. “He told the officer he could have his name whenevei- he wanted it, so the officer took it. The warning vzas not accepted in the spirit in which it was offered.’’ Defendant said he had no intention of ignoring the traffic regulations: in fact he never gave the mutter a thought. “It was your attitude toward the traffic officer that caused trouble,” said Mr. Levien, S.M. “You should have spoken to him in a decent sort of, way and not sharply. Traffic officers at busy intersections deserve some courtesy.’’ Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 10/-.
