MISTAKEN IDENTITY

Wrong’ Man Assaulted An admission that, he had struck complainant in the belief that he was another man was made by Richard Godfrey Copley, seaman, aged 21, when lie appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, charged with assaulting George Frael, at Wellington, on April 10. Senior-Sergeant G. J. Paine, who prosecuted, said that, on Monday afternoon Copley and several others had an argument in an hotel in Cuba Street. Later Copley met Frael at the corner of Cuba Street and Vivian Street and assaulted him, apparently mistaking him for one of the men with whom lie had been arguing in the hotel. It was alleged that Copley had knocked Frael down and kicked him. Copley had not been in trouble iu the past two years.

The magistrate imposed a fine of £2, iu default seven days’ imprisonment.
