“SCHOOL’S OUT” MEANS A CALL FOR MORE CARE
The familiar "School—Slow” signs erected near every school in the Dominion have lost tbeir restricted significance while .school is out, ns tens of thousands of children, usually confined to the precincts of their schools and under the control and guidance of their teachers, are at large in the city, town and village. Those children are enjoying a new-found freedom, the "heavy” cares of school are off their young shoulders, and many hundreds of the youngest s ort will find no trouble in forgetting what their teachers have told them about safety on the roads. In the enthusiasm of their games they ar.? apt to overlook for a dangerous minute or two the hazards of the roads. Many of them will make the street, their dangerous playground, they ivill do the unexpected thing, they will dart hither and thither in their play, they may dash from gateways or from around corners. They do these things because, they are children.
Road-Users Must Protect Children From Injury Now that the children attending the various schools are absent from the classrooms for the seasonal holidays there is a greater call on the carefulness and vigilance of the motorist, cyclist and the driver of the horse-drawn vehicle and the tramear. “School’s" out” to-day means more than the release of youngsters for play or holiday. It means an increased danger on the roads.
They demand the protective vigilance of all who use vehicles on the streets and roads. The big responsibility rests on the motorists, cyclists, horse-driver 5 and train-drivers of protecting the children from harm. Befau.se school is out. there are more children about than there were a few days ago. When you see them ahead on the footpath, singly or in groups, make allowance in speed and vigilance for the fact that they are children. Never take a risk, and sound the horn if necessary, as a courteous warning, and not as a threat. Parents should> not fail to remind their children that they should nor play on roadways. They should remind children of the dangers which are on the roads. In that way they will be continuing the safety propaganda of the teachers in the schools. Children must be protected from their own carelessness. Never let their well-being lie in doubt so far as you are concerned.
