Auckland’s Blockhouses
When the Maori wars threatened to touch Auckland city, blockhouses were built to shelter the citizens in case of danger. The Citadel, holding 6000 men, was situated on what is now Albert Park, and was called Albert Barracks. The smaller fortifications were built at Domain Hill, Parnell, Newmarket, Karangahape Road, Great North Road, and Freeman’s Bay. Often Auckland’s harbour had as many as six man-o-wars at a time at anchor bringing in troops fresh . from the Crhnpan Wars to swell the ranks of the Red Jackets. Compulsory service was enforced and the walls of the Citadel were patrolled at night. Frequently bells would ring calling all the city to afms, and as Iqte as 1864 business men were marched on at Otahuiiu and Papakura.— -D. Maslcn. (Wellington).
